The challenge
A bottling plant is several plants at once
Water arrives from a well and has to be treated before it can touch a product. Syrup is prepared in one part of the building and metered to mixers in another. Filling lines run to a schedule. Everything that leaves the site as wastewater has to meet a discharge standard. Each of these is a separate process, with its own instruments, its own failure modes and its own regulatory paperwork.
They had also been built at different times. Instrumenting a plant like this is rarely a clean-sheet exercise — it means adding visibility to equipment that already runs, from more than one manufacturer, without stopping production to do it.
What the plant needed was not a single system. It needed live values and archived history on the handful of parameters that determine product quality and compliance, in each of those areas, arriving in a form an operator could read at a glance and an engineer could interrogate later.

Delivered between 2012 and 2019, each covering a different process area.

Wastewater treatment
Automatic control, supervision and visualisation of the treatment plant, with live and archived records of the key parameters that govern what may be discharged.

Olimpija mineral water well B2
Control and supervision of the source itself — the first point in the chain, and the one where a fault stops everything downstream.

Syrup room
Instantaneous and cumulative mass flow and brix, tracked from the syrup tanks through to the mixers on the production lines. Brix is the sugar concentration — it is the product, measured.

Water treatment
Supervision and visualisation of raw and treated water, with live and archived parameter history across the treatment stages.

The relationship
What kept it going after the systems were built
A SCADA system is not finished when it is commissioned. Plants change, equipment is replaced, and software outlives the hardware it was written for.

WinCC to a Siemens S7-315C
Reconfiguring the SCADA system to talk to a Siemens SIMATIC S7-315C controller, including the MPI link between the computer and the PLC.

The Olimpija well back in service
Equipment supply and the work needed to return the well's automatic control system to full working order.
November 2023
The CIP plant, and process values out to file
SCADA parameterisation for monitoring the clean-in-place plant, with Profibus and TCP/IP communications established and drivers installed. Alongside it, software to pull live process values and write them to a file for downstream use — tested and signed off on site.

Why it lasted
Most faults never needed a site visit
The part of this the client chose to single out was not the engineering. It was the support model. A bottling plant runs to a schedule, and a control fault at three in the morning is measured in lost product, not in engineering hours — and the plant is a long drive from our workshop in Tešanj.
Remote diagnostics closes that gap. Faults are identified and, in most cases, cleared without anyone travelling — and the same connection that clears a fault is the one used to extend a system rather than replace it. That is why systems commissioned in 2012 were still being improved in 2023.
The last of those jobs is also the clearest ancestor of what Comex builds today: pulling live process values out of a plant and writing them somewhere they can be used. The Comex Control platform solves that same problem across a fleet of sites.
